Regardless if you are a CNA or Nursing student, you will now have to get the flu shot BEFORE performing your clinicals.

With recent outbreaks of hard to fight virus’, the nursing board now demands that we get these vaccinations before working with patients. This is something that should have been in place years ago, but since the recent, hard to tame strands of the flu, they finally put this practice in place. When in nursing clinicals, we come in contact with many sick people. Especially the young, elderly, and other people with decreased immune systems.

Do you think it is right for them to demand us to inject something in our body, even though we know we will get sick from it? Not all of us get sick from the flu shot. However, there are some of us that know our body much better than our doctors. We know for a fact how our body reacted to the last flu vaccination that we received in the past. So, should we do it? Yes. We are in the health care business. We care for people on a higher level than most. If we honestly care about people, we will put this vaccination into our body without thinking twice so that we can care for these patients.

The bottom line is that we MUST care for our own bodies, keep them in top physical shape in order to care for the ones that need us the most. Take care of your body, exercise, do not smoke or drink heavy and you should not have a problem with the flu shot. Keep that immune system strong by taking vitamins daily and getting plenty of vitamin C into the body each day.

The short answer is yes but we will tell you how you can go about doing this.  You can not get a certification online, but you can study our material, skills, and other information that will prepare you to take the state CNA exam and pass it.  So, You can not get a certification online because the certification requires that you spend at least 40 hours in a clinical setting.  But, to get your license as a CNA, all you have to do is study the written and skills material, pay the exam fees, and take your test.  If you pass, you’re a CNA!!

Some Registered Nursing courses are now requiring that you complete a college approved CNA course.  This in turn means that you can not test out.  If they require a CNA license, then yes, you can test out.

There are many different variables to this answer.  But in short, you CAN get your CNA license online but not the actual certification.

Is a CNA certification needed to obtain a job in the Certified Nursing Assistant field?  No.  Just complete the state test. Once your state test is completed, you will be on the Nursing Board Database showing your name, certification, expiration date, et cetera.

So, B&R Nursing School has decided to give you the information you need so that you can study at home for your CNA State Exam and pass with with no problems.  This study program is not for everyone.  You must have will power and be dedicated to this program.  If you are not the type to do things on your own, this program is not for you.  If you’re ready to become a CNA and are dedicated, read on…

1. You must study and practice each testing skill.  Not every skill, but just the skills the state will test you on.  Your skills may vary state to state, so check your local nursing board website for the skills for that state.

2. Study the basics.  The tests will test you in many different areas, from fire safety in the nursing home, to nutrition.  However, all of these questions on the state test are mainly common sense questions.  If you read into the question and answers, you can pretty much pass the test.

3. When practicing the skills, what helps most is to divide your skills into areas.  Such as the pre-skill steps like your introduction, checking patient name with bracelet, providing privacy with a curtain and so on.  Then, the post-skill steps like putting all of your items where they belong and making sure the call button is in the patients reach.

You can purchase blood pressure cuffs and stethoscope combinations online from as low as $19.  Practice all of your vital sign skills on your family members.  But try it on different family members, not just one.  This will help change things up a bit and you will not “learn” the pulse, blood pressure, and respirations from the same person and be expecting a certain number.

4.  It is very helpful during skill test time that you “Help” your testing partner out during the skills.  When I took my state test, my partner did not help me at all.  I had to ambulate a patient to wall 10 feet.  Once I placed the belt around her and stand her up, it was like she was acting like a REAL patient.  Do NOT do this to your partner. Help them out!  When she checked my respirations, I would take really deep breaths, even loud enough for her to hear.  That way, she would not have to guess when I was breathing.  This makes things so much easier.

Locating radial pulse

For some, this seems to be a little difficult, especially if your testing partner is not in great shape or is overweight.  You should practice on someone like this for your test so that you can get accustomed to exact location of the pulse for best results.

The steps for the CNA state test for counting radial pulse are as follows:

1.  Explain what you are going to do to the patient while speaking clearly, slowly, and face contact.

2. Place your fingertips on the thumb side of the clients wrist.  (See Photo for exact location)

3.  Count beats for one full minute. You must count for one minute or you will automatically fail.

4.  Make sure that your signaling device is in reach of the client before leaving.

5.  Wash Hands. (You do not have to wash hands after every skill, however you must verbalize or you will fail.)

6.  After obtaining the pulse of the client, you must record this on the sheet provided by the testing monitor.  You must be within +/- 4 to pass this skill. Anything over or under the number recorded by the test monitor, you will fail.

IMPORTANT Skill information to pass:  You must be within +/- 4, You must verbalize hand washing, Call Button must be within clients reach.  Never forget these important steps or you will fail or lose many points, which will also cause failure of your CNA skills exam.

Washing Hands

Washing hands is the most important skill for anyone in health care. In CNA school, you must demonstrate how to wash your hands, and say this during each skill at the appropriate time. Here are the steps to washing your hands for the CNA state test. **Please note- Some states require you to turn ON the water with a paper towel. Some only require that you use paper towels to turn the water OFF. Please make sure to know what your state CNA testing site will require you to do.

Steps to the Hand Washing CNA Skills test-
1. Turn on the water. Make sure the water is warm. (Make sure to know if your state requires you to turn on the water with a paper towel, or not.

2. Make sure to keep your hands down, not touching the sink (Automatic failure) and wet your wrists and hands thoroughly.

3. Apply enough soap to hands.

4. Lather all surfaces including the wrists, hands, fingers. Clean the nails by rubbing the open palm of your hand in a circular motion.

5. Rinse wrists, hands, fingers well.

6. Use a clean, dry paper towel to dry all surfaces from the wrists to fingernails.

7. After discarding those paper towels, get another paper towel and turn off the water. I personally use one for each, hot and cold knob, just to be on the safe side.

CNA Hand Washing Tips- You will be wearing a watch. Make sure this watch can slide on and off easily so you do not wet your watch, and then not be able to use it for the following skills assigned to you, such as checking blood pressure, counting respiration’s or pulse.

A routine of regular exercises is the best way to keep you fit, but keep in mind that all the exercises are not made equal and there are different ways to do it. But you don’t have to begin by running for miles and miles and break some records, but you can begin slowly, because running is doubt the best exercise when you want to develop cardiovascular fitness. If you think that you can’t run for long time then you can start by fast walking, only do whatever is possible for you in the beginning. After some time when you are able to increase the speed of your walking you can start to run in between alternatively. You shouldn’t kill yourself while doing any type of exercise, take your own time to do them and always take time to breathe properly in between.

It is said that running should go something like this, you should be able to talk when you are running, but you should not be able to sing and talk long sentences. Once you build up your capacity by practicing you will gradually move to next step of working on amount of distance that you can cover before you stop. You may start with half mile in the beginning and in another month or so you may move to one mile, make sure that you always keep pushing yourself for the next level.
